Coastal Hardware Collection

In an effort to broaden outreach, the company this was created with pairs up with famous interior designers to design hardware collections with their names attached to them. I was the lead product designer in this role, which entailed designing a coastal-inspired product line for the designer that fit within our machining capabilities.

INSPIRATION

The interior designer wanted hardware that was inspired by coastal design motifs. Simple forms meet textural features to create a universal line of hardware

IDEATION

I started with putting as many ideas on paper as I could, pulling inspiration from nature and coastal textures. The thumbnail sketches were reviewed for the strongest ideas in multiple rounds.

IDEATION - 2

Out of the strongest thumbnail sketches, I began ideating in 3D. Many versions of designs were made, which did not necessarily follow a strong design "family". Once some were identified to be the most marketable and aesthetically strong, I identified features that could make each of these items repeatable in other forms.

MIRAMAR

The Miramar collection was inspired by a request from the client/designer. The door knob was the starting point, which they requested in wood and brass. At the location where these were machined, we work solely with metals, so we redesigned in to be fully brass (image shown reflective of brass with nickel plating). The forms of the rest of the collection are inspired by the knob.

SEAGLASS

The Seaglass collection showcases simple forms with an emphasis on dual-tone finishing. The parts are designed to be CNCd with laser cut inserts for separate finishing.

ABOARD

The aboard collection was inspired by the organic form of a boat cleat. The concave surfaces create an ergonomic feel and provide more fluidity to the designers collections.

MANUFACTURING

Even after the form language had been dialed in, we still needed to consider machining and manufacturing as a whole. For example, one of the miramar pulls was initially designed to be 1.10", but we reduced it to 1" even so that we could use bar stock with minimal modifications.

LOOKING AHEAD

This is an ongoing design and is subject to change. Looking ahead, we anticipate adding more products to this line of hardware.
