TurnIt Home Composter

The goal of this project, along with many other aspects of my portfolio, was to integrate sustainability into small spaces. I wanted to create a composter that would be able to be a stand alone unit for individuals who may live with limited, or no land.

RESEARCH

Greenhouse gases are on the rise and 25% of those emissions are due to food waste. The average American produces 365 lbs of food waste per year. For every 365 lbs of food wasted, there are 690 lbs of CO2e (global warming potential) produced

SURVEY

56 Individuals were surveyed on their current composting habits and their thoughts toward integrating it into their day-to-day lives

Open Air Compost

36% of respondents who did compost, used open air compost systems, while 27% used tumbler compost systems.

Unwanted Pests

When asked about concerns about compost, 27% of respondents said that they didn’t want to attract pests, and 27% said they didn’t want the natural odor in their home.

Limited Space

When asked about why respondents didn’t compost, 40% said they felt they didn’t have the space available to.

INSPIRATION

Many in-home compost solutions do not actually aid in speeding up the composting process. By creating a solution inspired by an outdoor tumbler compost, we can reduce the time it takes for the compost to reach “end phase”. Many of the current products use sustainable and aesthetically minimalist materials, which I wanted to integrate into my design.

IDEATION

At first, I explored countertop solutions, but after reflection on my own living situation, I realized that counter space is a limited capital in small spaces. After this occurred to me, I came up with an under-the-cabinet solution.

LINER

A silicone liner allows for easy cleanability between uses.

COMPARTMENTS + HANDLE

- Double compartment allows enough room for end process compost and beginning phase compost.

- Handle allows for easy carrying from home to garden or houseplants

VENTILATION

Air ventilation provides enough space to advance composting process, but prevents insects from getting in or out
